OpenSourceLAB – Evaluating Velo, Part 1

Since I’ve noticed a lot of interest around open source IAM projects, I thought that an “Open source LAB” blog series could be useful to provide some information gathered during my practical investigations, in the hope to be helpful for corporations deploying their open source identity management solution.

The first projects I would like to evaluate is Velo developed by Safehaus.org. Velo is an open source user provisioning software that helps company by automating many administrative tasks associated with user account setup and maintenance and it seems to be one of the most promising IAM suites available.

Velo’s main features include:

  • provisioning
  • access control
  • password synchronization
  • audit & compliance
  • self-service interfaces
  • and many others

At the moment, the latest stable version is Velo 1.4. Even if the new Velo 2 is in design phase, during this LAB evaluation, I’m going to use the stable version 1.4 given that no usable code is still available for version 2.

The source code of Velo is made available through a SVN repository, while Windows installers are hosted by sourceforge.net [HERE].

Following the pre-requirements exposed on Velo’s web site, the configuration chosen for this test is composed by:

Velo Server
Velo Server Installer 1.4 [HERE]

JavaEE Application Server
JBoss-4.2.2.GA (already included in the Velo Server Installer)

Repository Database
MySQL 5.1 GA Windows MSI Installer (x86) [HERE]

Operating System
Microsoft Windows 2003

Java Development Kit
Java JDK v1.6 [HERE]

In the next post, we will go through the installation of Velo server and all its pre-requirements.
